What is sustainable farming
and Why Is It Important?

The word ‘sustainable’ is getting widely used lately to depict many different things, including farming in general. We have the term sustainable agriculture or sustainable farming. But what it is sustainable farming exactly? How is it different from regular farming? Read along to find out.

What is sustainable farming

Sustainable agriculture refers to the implementation of farming that emphasize on ecosystem services and the relationships between living organisms and the place where they live. The purpose is to fulfill human needs, enhance environmental quality, and improve the quality of life for farmers and the use of non-renewable resources efficiently.

Why is sustainable agriculture necessary?

To understand the importance of sustainable agriculture, perhaps we should take a look at the benefits of the implementation of sustainable agriculture. In general, sustainable agriculture gives benefits to both human and environment. The most obvious benefit of sustainable agriculture for human is that the farming provides us with organic products which are better options for our health. Sustainable agriculture supports farming techniques with little to none use of chemical pesticides or any additional preservatives in growing fruits and vegetables. As a result, crops grown through sustainable agriculture are better to consume as they have no chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Not to mention that the crops are more nutritious and healthier.

Meanwhile, for the environment, sustainable agriculture gives positive impacts because in general the farming techniques use 30% less energy. This means a lot to the environment because with less energy, there is also less chemicals and pollution into the environment. In addition, sustainable agriculture promotes to keep soil quality and save water. With such eco-friendly techniques, sustainable agriculture helps to increase biodiversity of the area by providing natural environments as their habitat, as it is supposed to be.

Considering the importance of sustainable agriculture as well as its benefits to both human and environment, we as a company fully support the implementation of sustainable farmers in any forms or methods. This cannot be separated from the fact that in running our business we are also using sustainable agriculture methods.

Sustainable farming methods

The principle of sustainable farming lies within the spirit to put the environment first. Consequently, sustainable farming methods carried out organic farming that supports eco-friendly techniques. There are various methods or practices applied in the framer of sustainable agriculture, such as:

  1. Promoting the use of renewable energy sources

The use of gas as fuels to provide energy in agricultural activities is not only costly but also risking the environment as it emits pollutant. Therefore, using alternate sources of energy is important in this matter. Sustainable agriculture promotes the use of solar panels to store solar energy to be used for farming machines, such as pumps and heaters. In addition, farmers can also produce hydroelectric power from running river water or geothermal heat pumps to dig beneath the earth and take advantage of earth’s heat.

  1. Integrated pest management

It may sound odd, but not all pests are harmful. So, rather than eliminating them, which will cost money, it is better to let them co-exist with the crops. As for dangerous pests that harm crops, farmers are encouraged to only eliminate the targeted pests. This way the wildlife in general will not get affected and we can still maintain a balanced ecosystem.

  1. Natural Pest Eliminators

Some pests can be gotten rid of without using pesticides, either chemicals or biological. This can be achieved by taking advantage of their natural predators, such as bats, birds, ladybugs, and beetles. These animals and insects can feed on pests, such as mice, aphids, and mites.

  1. Crop rotation

Crop rotation is applied by keep changing the types of crops planted in the same soil after harvesting.  This method has been applied since ancient farming practices to keep nutrients and salts in the soil. This way, the soil always has the adequate nutrients for the crops. In addition, crop rotation is also a permanent and effective solution to pest problems. The reason behind this is because pests tend to have preferences for specific crops, as they will get long supply of food for their survival. Changing the crops occasionally will make the pests move away.

  1. Crop diversity

Crop diversity is a farming practice where farmers grow different varieties of crops on the same soil.  While increasing production, this practice also reduces the farming cost. For example, in one land, farmers can plant tomatoes and chili pepper. Planting peppers on coffee plantation is also a common technique in tropical country, so the farmers get to harvest two crops: pepper and coffee.

Finally, earth is the only place we live. Earth is the only planet we’ve got to call home. If we don’t take care of it by giving attention to our environment, then we don’t deserve to call it home. That is why, among many other reasons, sustainable farming should be supported.
